Arthur Suydam

Award winning creator and Marvel artist Arthur Suydam’s meteoric rise to superstardom for his work for the smash hit series Marvel Zombies reportedly broke graphic novel records and prompted a Pop-Culture zombie phenomenon, immediately placing the artist in the category of comic legend.

Recent awards include: The Spike TV, Scream Award (best writer, best artist, best comic of the year), the prestigious Spectrum Gold Award for Institutional Art (2006), The San Sebastian Film Festival Lifetime Achievement Award, from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lifetime Achievement Award, and numerous fan-site favorite awards across the globe. Suydam’s short story Christmas Carol was chosen for The Mammoth Book of Horror and Legends and The Art of Painted Comics (2008).

The Suydam family Art Legacy in New York reads like a who’s-who in American art beginning in the 16th century when the family came over to fight in the Indian Wars in Hudson, establishing a Dutch trading post which later became New Amsterdam and eventually New York.  At the outset of the Civil War, Hudson River painters James and Henry Suydam, along with contemporaries Frederick Church, Thomas Cole, Albert Beirstadt, John Kensett and Sanford Gifford helped win American artists recognition worldwide for the first time.  James Suydam’s work hangs in the New York Academy Museum.  Great-uncle E.H. Suydam is one of America’s most renowned architectural artists, with drawings hanging in the White House and Museum of New York.  Arthur Suydam and contemporary Richard Corben are credited with first introducing fully painted sequential art to comics in the early 70s and 80s.

Arthur Suydam’s popular covers have graced the covers of the Walking Dead, Marvel Zombies, Deadpool, Merc with a Mouth, Dead Days, the Misfits Devil’s Rain, Land of the Dead, Batman, Wolverine, X-men, Ghost Rider, Thor, Spider Girl and many more.  In 2008, Marvel released an exclusive hard cover tribute to the works of this unique artist entitled Marvel Zombies, The Covers dedicated to Suydam’s ground-breaking work.  Additional recent works include Army of Darkness, Savage Tales, Red Sonja, Black Panther, and the smash hit Army of Darkness vs Marvel Zombies, Batman vs Predator, Conan the Barbarian, Tarzan and the House of Secrets and The Tick.

Suydam’s own projects are numerous and include Mudwogs and The Adventures of Cholly & Flytrap, Center City, Giants, Bedtime Stories for the Incarcerated, Fireflies, Love Me, Love My Demons and many more.

A life-long fan of Marvel comics, Suydam also branches out with select projects that include film noir for Hard Case Crime, where Suydam provides retro-inspired covers.
